I am new to the forum and have been looking at buying a used explorer for a while now. I think I found one that is a pretty good deal.
It is a 2000 Eddie Bauer Edition 5.0 v8 with 68k on the clock. I drove it this evening and the transmission seemed very tight could barely tell it shifted. Everything looked good no leaks, noises or smells. I am not looking to tow but would like to get 40-50k out of it at least.
I thought I would post and see if anyone can offer advice on what to look out for or known problems. Everyone here seems great with advice and since I am new to explorers and SUVs in general I thought I would chime in. (I hsould also mention I have always done my own maintenance so I know my way around a bit). Thanks
How much was it? you can get way more than 40k-50k out of that truck....i just sold a 92 with 160k and the only major thing done was a tranny rebuild at 125k. I have a 97 XLT 5.0 v8 AWD with about 86k on it and its fine.... this is my 3rd explorer as i love them alot. the only thing that sucks is mpg on the v8's, i get like 14 mpg. i can go like 250 miles before i have to fill up....
thats a bit on the high side, i would offer between 7800-8500. edmunds.com is showing 7500 as a true market value for a private party sell..... dealer sell is 8900
It is at a dealer and has every option so that may add a bit to it. It does come with a 2k or 2 month warranty as well? I might try to knock a bit off of it.
Goto cars.com and you can see what the same type of vehicle is selling for in your area. I'm assuming it's AWD, if so, make sure it works properly. Since you are buying it from a dealer, demand a carfax report on it. If it's ever been leased or autioned, I'd think about walking away from it. Also, I'd be looking for a higher warranty than what they are offering. Whatever warranty you get, make sure you understand what it does/doesn't cover. Good luck.
Thanks for the heads up. The carfax report shows it was leased then the lease was bought out at the end.
What is the best way to check the AWD? I have seen a few posts about issues with the AWD but not specifics as what they are. I drove it over snow in the parking lot and tried to accelerate one the slick part of the road and didn't hear any strange noises or the like. One thing I did notice is a barely perceptible vibration in the rear when I got on the highway (50-55) that seemed to go away when I got up to speed (65). I thought it may have been the snow?
I will likely go back and drive it again to iron out any details before I buy it.. but I am by no means set on this vehicle (will get a 97-01 explorer though).
Thanks for all of the great response so far, I really appreciate it.
