Steering Column

Hello. New subscriber here. I am restoring a 66 f-100 and need to locate a steering column. Ididit and Flaming River do not make a column for this application. I need a column shift and don't particularly care if it's tilt or straight. Any thoughts on interchangeability? Thanks.

Welcome to FTE!

I don't know of anyone who makes an aftermarket column for the 3 speed manual. From what I can tell, you can use one from a 61 through 68, but most of the 67/68s are for power steering, and are 2 inches shorter.

If its for the Automatic Column shift, I don't know, but I do know that the column design stayed basicly unchanged from 61 to 79, with only a diffrence in liength for the power steering.

Ididit makes a collum for the 66. however it has chevrolet internals and wiring harness connections. They do not advertise it as a 65 66 ford unit.

I had discussion with the owner about this at the supernationals and peeves that it has a GM connector.

It is not a direct replacment. and needs mounts and rag joint mods.

What application are you looking for? What is wrong with the steering collum you have?

The truck has an unoriginal column which I cannot identify. I have shown the column to some local resto shops and several classic parts supplies, but still cannot identify. Therefore I can't order repair parts. The truck has an auto. trans. and the shift lever is in terrible condition--will not move. Thanks for the reply.

You can use a steering column for manual steering and automatic '67 - '72 that will bolt in, with the same electrical connectors.
The only modification you may need to make is in the shift lever from the column to the transmission; the shafts are not quite the same, but it is doable.
You can use a '73 - '79 column for manual steering, if you are willing to match up the electrical wiring in the colunm to your '66 system.
You wil also find the same issue with the shift lever.

Can you post a picture especially a closeup or two of the column in there now?
One of the top with the steering wheel off and one of the under-dash mounting would be great, and may help us help you ID it.
