I am in a quandry. I need to replace the transmission fluid in my 99 expedition XLT 4.6L. It takes regular Mercon.
But the dealer wants 286.00 for the job. Jiffy libe will do it for a lot less, but they use a basic all purpose fluid that allegedly works for Dexron III and Mercon. They say they put additives in to meet specific manufacturers requirements. The other guys like AAMCO and MIDAS seem to do the same.
Should I pay $200 extra and have the dealer do it? I just don't have the time or garage space to do it myself, and its just too darn cold outside to be crawling around.
I usually have the dealer do mine for about $150.00. Not cheap but it's to messy for me to try alone. I do my own motor oil/filter changes, transfer case fluid, tire rotation, etc. but not the main trans. No pan drain so you drop the whole pan and it pours out around the edges - great engineering for DIY guys. I also go to the dealer to make sure I get the right fluid. Can you buy the Mercon and have any service station change it? Is Jiffy Lube doing exactly the same service as the dealer - filter, etc. I'm not sure what else. A trans is an expensive item to be fooling with. Hopefully others will chime in.
you could just do it yourself. drop the pan drain the t/c refill with 13 quarts fluid. cost you 15.00 for fluid and anohter 20.00 for gasket and filter.
