do i need new headers?

I have really old headers on my 68 f100. They are very rusty. Is there anyway to take them out and sand them then paint them, and clean the inside of them...is it even worth it? thanks

You can buy a header paint from Eastwood restoration products that is supposed to live at higher temperatures than regular header paint. Pull the headers and get 'em sandblasted, then paint with the Eastwood product. Not much point in trying to clean out the inside of the headers. If they are that full of garbage, best to just replace the headers completely.

Man if they are not leakng, or if you are not showing the truck, you had better leave them the heck alone. You are asking for trouble IMHO.

I agree with Joe,
You risk messing something up if you jack around with them.
And don't sandblast them, that stuff is harsh, and would probably dig holes all in your rusty headers. If you get new ones, remember that painted headers are painted so they don't rust in the box. Once you get them on, the paint burns of and you have the same problem.

If you want good looking headers, the only real answer is to have a new set Ceramic coated, or buy ones that come coated.

Techline makes a product called Black Satin that seems to get a good rep on some of the other lists I read. It requires that the headers be sandblasted before it is applied though. If your headers are 16 ga and not too rusted sandblasting with a hobby blaster is OK. Those places that specialize in cleaning gravestones are best avoided, too high a pressure, enough to warp sheet metal in some cases. Ask me how I know ;>) Other wise leave them alone until they rust through, then buy the best ones you can afford. Saves trouble in the long run.
