I have a 86 f150 with duel tanks and a 302 efi. Here are the symptoms. When you just ease around and are not climbing any hills with no loads it does fine. problem is when you haul something or just try to hit passing gear (has a aod tranny) it lunges or surges like it is starving for fuel I replace fuel filter no change in running any ideas of what to check for now. thanks scott
Could very well be a crack in one of the fuel lines.. Might be sucking in to much air when you step on it.. I had a hell of a time this past summer with my 83 f150 with similar issues...I had replaced all the fuel lines as well as the fuel pump(twice) and filters with no change, only to find that I had a tiny pin hole on the metal tube at the top of my sending unit.. Installed a new one and all was well...Hope that helps ya.. Good luck
I pretty much had that same problem with mine a few years back. It would do fine just cruisin, then when I went to pass someone on a two lane road, it would just spit and sputter. I replaced the fuel pump. And she ran like a champ agian. It's the external pump on the frame rail under the driver door. It's a piece of cake to change out.
Have you noticed your fuel usage changing at all? Cause that happened to mine as well.
just follow the lines as they leave the fuel tank. The filter is incased in a round black housing I used a filter wrench to spin of the housing. good luck. scott
I have a '86 F150, 5.0 EFI 3 sp auto. There is no canister fuel filter. There is a black plastic canister that appears to spin off on the frame. Of course my Haynes manual does not show this. It runs great until I try to step hard on the gas.
That balck canister should be the fuel tank switch that diverts fuel from either the front or rear tank. In the bottom of that switch, is a cartridge style fuel filter that was supposed to last the life of the truck. They don't and are nasty black and clogged. Spin off the bottom of that switch and take the filter out and put in a new one but BE CAREFUL. The gasket is very very easy to pinch and cut when putting it back on.
The truck should run better when done. The filter only costs like 3 bucks.
Yep. I found another post that showed a picture of it. Just got back from a test drive and can hold her wide open without any hesitation! Now my gas mileage will drop being able to give it more than a quarter throttle.
Thanks.
