opinion on something

hey all,
hey i was wondering if i could get some of your opinions on something. i own a 2003 f-150. its 2wd, 4.2l, 5speed. Well i was thinking about making it an offroading vehicle. Nothing too serious just a rear locker, small lift, bigger and better tires. Would it be worth it capability wise to do this or would i be better off just buying something with 4wheel drive? Any info would be appreciated.thanks

nothing real serious like rock crawling or anything. Just mud, hills, inclines, sand, those type of things. I guess something that a lightly modded 4X4 could handle.

Make a prerunner out of it. Do a goggle search for some really cool prerunner fenders for it. A prerunner is a 2wd (most of the time) big tire, high travel suspension, high speed desert ride. Like what you see running BaJa...

well as cool as having a prerunner sounds im a college student and i dont think id have enough money to buy after market fenders, have them painted along with a suspension lift and new tires and wheels. Also i dont really know of any places that i could go where i could do something like that. This vehicle also has to be my daily driver and all im looking for is something that can get through most offroad trails and occasional mud holes. I could sell my truck and buy a 4X4 i was just wondering if a 2wd has the capabilities of going places most 4X4s can go without burning a hole in my pocket. Anyways thanks for any help thus far.

Don't forget a ****** strap, and front/rear anchors

For the most part a 4x4 will out do a 2WD on any trail that is traction limited. I run my 4x4 in 2WD occasionally and I loose a lot of traction, (I also have a full time locker in the rear). The trails you describe are typical and you will have fun, but if you get in deep, you will likely get stuck. That is why I mentioned the straps, ohh and an recovery vehicle too . My front wheels almost always save me in deep mud or when the back end starts sliding for the edge of no return.

I just don't see many 2WD offroad. What your lift and better tires will buy you is ground clearance for rougher trails, but not really off road. My 2WD is the same as yours but an auto, and it does ok in snow and stuff, but I really miss my 4x4 (down for a clutch change).

Good luck, wheel on!

Save the dough you would be putting into your current ride and put it towards a 4x4 once you sell your current 2wd. There is NO substitute for a 4x4 when it comes to off-roading.
Keep this in mind though, if you are a poor college student...then gas mileage will most likely be an issue (if you travel back home frequently etc.) and a 4x4 does considerably worse than 2wd's do. I suggest buying an old "beater 4x4" for off roading, just to get your feet wet with. You can pick up old Suzuki Samurai's or BII's for next to nothing. Personally I've had 4 Sammi's over the years and they litterally can flip down a hill...you and a buddy get out, flip it back over and climb it again. Not recommended..but I have done it. Pick up a cheap $1000 or less 4x4 that is rotting to pieces but still functional and tear the hell out of it on the trails.

Bigger tires in the rear and a decent winch and you can go anywhere and have fun I have seen 2 wheel drives pull off amazing feats at the mudhole but the big thing is is your truck manual that makes a difference you need the low end.appreciate ya!
