Ivan, your point would have some merit, if it did apply to the point of the thread. I would agree with your view, if that were all there were to it. However, it is not.
What is so irritating to most people is that employees are not expressing their individual intended message, as from the individual itself. (did that make sense?)
I think the thing that makes some of us so angry is that most of these people are being directed to state their wishes in an accepted manor, to not offend 15% of the population in The USA. Yes, that is correct, 85% of Americans believe in what the Christmas Holiday really does stand for. So because a few folks had a hard time tolerating The Christmas Holiday, entities like the ACLU go head hunting and try everything in their power (which they have alot of) to terminate any expression thereto.
This country, USA, was built on Christian phylosophies, and the most previlent of these phylosophies was "TOLERANCE". So Christians build a nation of tolerance, and the so called "AMERICAN" Civil Liberties Union finds a need to exercise intolerance, in the interest of Americans?????
If someone was sincerely wishing me a Happy Holiday or Happy Chanikka (sp) or what ever, and they really were doing this sincerely, I would be flattered that they were wishing me the best they knew of or believed in. But that is not the current climate. There is a war waged on alot of people's beliefs and I see no reason these people shouldn't be upset with that.

How long until the PC crowd realizes that we can't say 'happy holiday' either? Why? because 'holiday' is a contraction. The historic root of the word is 'holy' and 'day'. IE by wishing someone 'happy holiday' you are in fact saying 'happy holy day'.

MEH. This thread can't last anyway.

actually, after reading some of these, i think i see the root of my anger. Its the fact that the REASON for saying holidays instead of Christmas is so absolutely ridiculous. Lets be real, how is Happy Holidays any better?? It would be best if they just didnt say anything. I mean what OTHER holiday falls around this time of year? Guess what, ALL of them have to do with religion. So, what the hell?? And i am wrong, i shouldnt punch the greeter in the head, after all, i KNOW that if any of them wanted to wish anything to anyone, it would be a merry Christmas.

That's exactly why our company put's happy holiday's on it's signage. It's definitely not an assault on Christmas, to be PC, or out of fear of offending someone. It's just a convenient way to acknowledge every one's holiday. Christmas is still called Christmas. That nicely decorated pine tree in the lobby is referred to by everyone, regardless of their religion, as a Christmas tree, not a Holiday tree. Nor do we refer to the Menorah, also displayed, as a holiday candelabrum. Just because a few nut jobs on both side's of an argument have blown things out of proportion, and the media has chosen to run with it, doesn't mean it's actually an issue or grand conspiracy for the vast majority of us.

Well, all those people that say Happy Holidays show their ignorance just a little. I was even dumb on the meaning of Holiday, until I educated myself. The word Holiday was originally pronounced Holy Day. It's root is remebering the reason for the whole season of Christmas.

So in that respect, Happy Holy Day to all of you!!!

Just my two-cents worth.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Pretty much every other English speaking country in the world uses the word "holiday" in place of what we call vacation i.e. The kids and I are going on holiday at the lake. Even in this country we have bank "holidays" that have nothing to do with holy days. MLK Day is considered a holiday, presidents day, 4th of July, etc. Yes, the term originated from holy day but that's not how we use it in this day and age. I consider New Year's a holiday and when people say happy holidays I'm assuming they mean Christmas and New Years.

I really don't appreciate the ACLU, can't stand all the junk about removing scriptures, 10 commandments, etc from government buildings. I just don't see why "Happy Holidays" is making people want to punch greeters in the head. I can think of a dozen better reasons to want to do that.

Just don't allow the friggin schools to tell my kid, or big business to tell one of its employees to not say one or the other, right? That includes Christ mas!
Whether or not you want to believe it, that is what is going on. Entities like the ACLU believes that Christianity has been dominant in our society for too long. And that is why they want to deliver as many blows to it as they can. There is a blatant and obvious assault on the roots of our heritage, and many have declined to stand up to this movement because they don't want to be labeled as a right wing wacco. I am NOT a right wing wacco, but I also am not afraid of stating the obvious, regardless of other's perceptions.
Once again, it is okay to state Merry any thing you want at any time of the year you want. But don't waste everybody's time declaring Christ is bad dialogue. That is what the wacco morons on the other end of the spectrum are doing.
Stand up. Don't be afraid to shut them down.
