My 94 explorer has 118,000 miles on her and I have noticed over the past four months that the coolant level in the reserve tank has dropped enough that I have had to add coolant. I have never noticed any antifreeze contamination in the oil or any leaks. Is this something to be concerned about or is this NORMAL for this engine. Thanks allot.
I have a 1992 Exploder which has been a very loyal means of transportation for about 263000Kms (almost 160000 miles) and when I started losing coolant, it was due to the actual radiator design... one of very few complaints I have with this vehicle. The rad core is aluminum, and the tanks on the sides are plastic. The core is crimped onto the tanks and there is a rubber seal in between. The problem that occurred is referred to as a cold leak, meaning when the engine/rad/coolant is cold, the rad leaks at the seal until the rubber seal expands (heat) and stops the leak. So when the engine is warm, it stops leaking. I tried having the rad "repaired" at a rad shop, and it lasted 2 weeks and started leaking again, so I replaced it ($273.00CAD at Canadian Tire) and I do not lose a drop now. Been fine for the last 2 years. Check under your rad next time you start it up and it is below freezing temp. Let me know what you find.
Well I wish that was the problem but I did have the radiator replaced about a month ago due to the problem you described. I think the small loss of coolant might be due to a intake gasket but I am not for sure. I did a Blackstone Oil sample and they found no coolant contamination in the oil so the problem is not that bad. And I have to admit it does not loose a whole lot and it runs great so i would just have to say that im going to drive it. There seems to be no problems from it. What is your opinion.
