best fuel mpg

I recently did a tune up on my 95 I-6 F-150. I have 175,000 on the clock. And I belive im getting the best MPG I can get using 87 octan. I notice when Im going up hill on the on the highway going about 75mph, and I put the petal to the floor I get a light pinging/tapping sound from the motor. Almost sounds like the lifters/rockers tapping. Now if I just let off about an inch off the petal it goes away. When I replaced my distributer about 2 years ago (when I had my hesitation problem) and I did some fine tunning with the timming, I advanced it till I got the just a little bit of pinging and then turned it back just enough to get rid of it. With just about all of the parts replaced I think its about as good as its going to get. Now if I put in 89 octan. It goes away completly! Now if i could just keep it below 80 mph I may be able to get better gas milage. Just thought I would share it with you all.

out of curiousity, what is your mpg...what size gears do you have?

Glad you were able to get a handle on your Pre-Ignition problem, 'cause it could have Really done some interesting damage if not taken care of as soon as you did.
