Hey everyone, I forgot to plug my truck in at work the otherday, was a little cold outside yesterday, about -17 Celcuis. I went out to start it, it preheated fine, started very poorly, and was running like it was on only 2 cyl. Ram for abour 20 seconds and stalled, it did this twice. Then on the third start it ran, but with incredible fuel knock, and horrifice shake for abour 10 minutes. I understand that when it's cold it's gotta be plugged in, but I dont think this right. Alberta Canada gets alot colder, and sometimes, you just can't plug em' in. I used an OBDII scanner and it reveialed absolutly nothing. Not a single code. and the one that was there last week is gone. I had a Boost/Performace code (can't remember the number).
Any Ideas why this happening, its getting colder here by the day, and I dont want to kill my ride. Ford says that can't do anything unless theres a code. I thinks thats ridiculous.
I've got a 2003 F350SD 6.0L AFE Intake, Banks 4" catback Exaust. All chips have been removed, Injectors replaced 20K ago. Truck has 115K on it.
What weight oil are you using? I switched over to 10W30 for the winter last month because of the 15W40 gets very thick. Set a bottle of both outside and try to pour. Changing to lighter oil helped here in Michigan a lot, with the startup and noise and rattle. It rolls over faster because it doesn't have oil drag on the crank and other parts.
I think this would be pretty normal for starting at -17 if the truck was cold from a full shift at work. The 6.0 uses oil pressure to pressuruze the fuel. If the oil is really cold and thick, its going to run really rough until there is some heat in it to start pumping the oil. This is normal as it gets. If you can, plugging in is best. I started mine at -10 after all day at work, we have no plugs and it was pretty noisy. I gave it 5 minutes on high idle, then took it easy. You might want to check, what weight oil you are using, for -20 and below, no towing, perhaps a lighter oil would be better for you.
Just took the thing in for winter maintence at my dealership, there are so few here that you can trust but I have a reputable one now, been using them for about a year now, they do all of my service. I asked for the winter package, so Im not sure exactly what weight of oil is in it. Did the same thing last winter, never had the problem. I know the fuel knock is somewhat normal, or so ive been told when its cold, but stalling has never happened. It did it again last night when i left the bar, was outside for a while.
Im also running Howes fuel additive, have been for the last 9 months. I run Petro Canada Diesel every tank.
2005 F350 CC LB Dually Lariat 15,000 miles. Have always used 15w40 Oil. Plug it in most of the time. There were however many nights with temps -20-28 Celcius here in southern Ontario and while travelling in eastern Canada. Truck has always started first try, no smoke. It is a bit noisy while warming up. I always fill up at diesel stations where they go through a lot of fuel and for last 10,000 miles have been using fuel additive. The kind of start you explained is certainly not common and the dealership should be able to give you some good advice.
Good thing I did a search. This is just the thread I needed. I had the same problem as BoneBreak, only, my block heater didn't come on for some reason. I had it plugged in all night but it was not on. Anyway, truck was real hard to start and did exactly what BoneBreak's truck did. Well, having more money than sense maybe, I bit the bullet and put Molbil 1 Synthetic 10w30 in my rig. It really was time for an oil change (in about 250miles) and I was going to research oil weights tonight but I decided to change it instead. Honestly, when I was looking at oils, I read the Motorcraft 15W40 bottle and it recommended the 10w30 for the climate I am experiencing. It was 4 deg Farenheit this morning (minus 16 deg centigrade or 257 kelvin).
I am going to leave the truck unplugged tonight just to see what happens. Worst case, it starts and purs like a kitten. What?!?! Yeah, that means I have to keep running Mobil 1 at $4 / qt!! These things take 13.5 qt!!
Yeah 15w40 is what ford put it in. I am thinking now it is time to change it out, sucks too cause I only have 500 miles on it. with the problems i've been having i've resorted to driving my car. I dont want to do damage to it, and Im now waiting for the Diesel Mechanic that I know to come back from holidaze. There are so few people I trust with my ride. Ahh well, will let everyone know what he says when I get it checked.
