351 Tune Up Help

I recently bought a 77 F150 4X4 with a 351M that's been rebuilt. It has a cheap aftermarket breather and a few vacuum lines capped as a result. It's been 15 years since I did any engine work so I've been reading a lot of the posts here regarding vacuum line woes. Problem is, i can't find a good resource that shows the vacuum line routing for my engine (and it's not intuitive to me since I've not owned or worked on one in quite some time). I checked autozone.com--they have the same terrible diagrams that my Chilton manual has. Anyone know of another (free) resource to check for vacuum diagrams and tuneup recommendations?

The engine diesels some and seems to idle a little fast so vacuum lines and timing are first on my list of things to check. Any help would be appreciated.

deiseling on shut off is usually caused by the idle speed being too high, turn it down a touch and see if that problem doesn't just go away. the timing being advanced too much will also cause the idle speed to be high, you're on the right track, get the timing set and idle speed right and we'll find a diagram.

This is the late 70's emissions control problem. That is, they made a lot of emissions setups, and then they kept changing them.

Finding the diagram for your particular setup for 1977 means knowing model, engine, transmission, and original state of sale (California or 49-state?). I would assume it's automatic and 49-state, so that would make it 7-72-R0, but it may not be.

(It also depends on what you mean by rebuilt. Same engine and parts but cleaned up, or a different rebuilt engine (and probably different emission parts)? Or even a different (rebuilt) engine size? So you need to check the door frame label for the VIN and GVW and sales district.)

Original engine (best I can tell), originally sold in NC and remained there until I purchased it (still has dealership sticker on tailgate), will check on transmission. Supposed to be a C4 based on the VIN, but I haven't actually checked (have yet to go through and record all the ID tags and stamps).

VIN F14HNY02504
GVW F140
Trans code G
dist code 22 (Charlotte, which makes sense cause I bought it in NC)

Still haven't crawled under to see trans id plate--short days and sick kids at home

Weird that it's a C4, but then it's GVW of 6050, so it's just over the emission limit. It's a 7-72-R0. Here ya go:

Trans code G is for a C6.... Both of my 79s have that code and they are C6s. Besides, C4s didn't have the 335/385 series pattern ever.

When I got my first 351M, I had to lean it out with the idle screws on the carb and back the timing off to get it to run right.

Actually you can get bellhousings for a C4 that have the 385 series bolt pattern. They even have a Ford part # on them but I don't know the actual vehicle applications.

On edit:

I posted this before I looked at the eBay link so maybe the application is in F-series trucks.

from what little i understand the C4 in the F series was available from the factory only one model year? i'm not sure that the 351M or 400 was even in production that year either, the C4 might've been behind a 302, 351W, or even an FE for all i know? but the 385 series C4 bell is real, racers grab them up for the C4's ability to transmit HP without gobbling it up. probably the trans and driveline dept has more info...

Yep, you put a built C4 behind a built 460 and take it to the strip.

I've seen 302 2wd, 300-6 2 & 4wd trucks with the C4 tranny... I've seen that bellhousing available from Ford Racing and I think Lakewood makes one. Besides, that doesn't even look like a Ford part number (or engineering number)

The Ford part # for the C4 bellhousing that came on 75-76 F-series trucks with the 351M/400 is D5OP-7976-BA.

Except that ford didn't use the 351M/400 until '77.

Good point, it must've been a car application then. Obviously I need more coffee before I start researching this stuff.
