Well, I was warming my truck up the other day at about 5 because it had been sitting all day... and i started to smell something. Went outside my truck and looked underneath and it looked like engine oil but it was too thick.. and it was coming out from where the bellhousing and the block bolt up. What would it be? gear lube or engine oil? It was really thick and brown. I havent got a chance to get really into detail because i have been really busy, but does anyone have an idea of what it could be? I was told it could be the rear main and some other stuff, but what do i really check for? The tranny is a c6 auto.
Thick and brown doesn't sound like auto tranny fluid which would be reddish in color (although it could be brownish if there's tranny trouble, but not thick). Sounds likely it's a bad rear main seal.
Well if it was brown it could be burnt tranny fluid, but if it was thick and the tranny is working ok then it probably is not tranny fluid. Tranny fluid is about as thick as 10wt oil. You are just going to have to investigate further and see if you can determine where it is coming from and then get back on and repost with more info, engine size, vehicle, etc..
my bad guys, it is a 1979 F-250 4x4 with a 390FE in it. It looked as if it was coming from where the bellhousing and the block bolt up. I am going to take it to my school shop here intown and get it on a lift today and see what was up with it.. hopefully i can figure it out! i will let you guys kno tomorrow.
by the way the tranny has been slipping too... before the incident. it had been slipping for around a month and ahalf or so. but only when i put it in reverse and then into another gear.
