tailgate

I have a 78' fleetside 4x4. I need to find a tailgate. My question is, do the tailgates from all year models (73-79) fit one another. I looking for one locally but would like to know what year models will fit my 78'.

Thanks, Wallyford

I believe all from 73-79 will fit, but there are different trim levels and styles for different years.

I believe all 1973 to 1979 tailgates are all interchangable.
LMC and NPD both sell replacement tailgates.

hope this helps.

many of the aftermarket tailgates are thin and not very strong. An original tailgate in good shape goes for a decent $$ amount on ebay.

This may increase the chances of finding one, 67-72 will also work and fit
although, I can spot them on 73-79 from about a mile
away! The tail gate latch is different and the shape is different also, I guess
that if I needed one bad and could get it cheaper, I would run one!

BY the way: I don't think they look that bad at all! 90 percent of people would never notice!

Yup!
I had one on my '79 for a few years. While I can only spot them for a couple hundred feet, most people wouldn't have a clue it didn't leave the factory that way if the paint matched.

Yes 73 -79 are interchangeable.

Now, Fleetside is a GM Term.

Ford calls it a Styleside.

a "styleside" is easy to find. you can use 73-79 and 67-72 and also 61-66 will fit.
