Had problems last year with the vac pump . Went to use it today and the front axle did not engage. Thought i was stuck in my driveway. Finally indicator came on the dash and it worked.Anyone else have this problem or an answer?
The dash indicator (both of them actually) is strictly a transfer case indicator. When you turn the dash switch to "4x4 High" the transfer case mounted servo motor is actuated moving the shift fork and engaging the gears. Once the shift fork reaches the end of its travel and the gears are fully engaged the indicator on the dash lights. If the indicator doesn't light it's typically because the gears are bound, usually because the truck is either in gear or in park and the hubs have already locked via the vacuum pulse.
Try shifting into 4x4 while the truck is moving or while the transmission is in neutral. It should be fluid and without a large delay. If there is a large delay with the dash indicator coming on it's a transfer case problem, not a hub problem.
