I spent most of Christmas Eve dropping my C4 out and most of Christmas day trying to clean it up. It was so filthy you couldn't tell what metal it was made of. The thing that did the best was Easy Off oven cleaner. Today, we disassembled and inspected the transmission. Thankfully, there weren't any big surprises. Even though I took that thing apart I don't think I could remember how to reassemble it without some help. Fortunately, my friend knows these things totally from memory, having rebuilt many.
The front band was so thin I don't think it was even grabbing at all. Also, all the clutch material was sitting in the bottom of the pan. The tranny fluid smelled totally cooked. Although the front pump gears looked ok to me my friend said we should go ahead and put a kit in the front pump. The total parts includes the front pump kit, master rebuild kit, converter swap out and thrust washers and came to $140. That doesn't sound too bad except I only paid $650 for the whole truck, LOL. Hopefully, tomorrow the tranny will go back together and my truck will now have some legs.
I paid 10X that easily for a crappy rebuild from AAMCO. It still runs a little funny sometimes. I'll never go there again. Or pay that much for a C4 to be rebuilt.
$140 is my parts cost. I'm paying my friend another $100 for use of his shop and some guidance. He owns a collision repair, salvage yard and used car lot. It pays to have friends like these guys(he has 3 sons that are all motor heads too, LOL) and they won't allow just anybody to come in to their place like what I'm doing. I'm doing a lot of the work including dropping the tranny, all the clean up, some of the reassembly and I will also reinstall it. There is more work in the clean up than what I expected and the clean up is absolutely critical to the thing running right.
I got a carry in price here of $375 from a fairly good transmission shop. He said that the parts were getting hard to find. Uh, NOT, LOL. The transmission supply place had totally everything in stock. I prefer to see it done myself because of exactly what you mentioned. Some of these places will short you on parts that should be replaced, don't clean up adequately especially in the valve body and won't flush out the cooler lines so you have a short lived tranny after that.
