In early 2003 I picked up a 1983 F-350 dump from my uncle who put a 460 in it. Didn't pay much for it since the bed became buckled and snapped off one of the hinges. (He said he got greedy with his last load of road dirt) I had a brand new steel 12.5 ft x 7.5 ft Rugby Landscaper Bed with 5 ft sides, a passenger side door, tailgate, and swinging back doors installed. A dumpster on wheels. A true roofers cream dream. After that, I had a few of bugs to work out, starter, battery, solenoid...tires, windshield. Meanwhile, the whole time the clutch was a leg and lower back exercise, especially to get it rolling in creeper gear. After dropping the drive shaft once I finally shredded the tranny on another occasion. Got the tranny that came with the 460 that my uncle swapped into the truck and I was back in business. It also seemed to help with the clutch, not as jumpy. Then in September, I seized the motor! Bought a rebuilt 460 and endless new parts for the motor. Still a few bugs to work out currently but running strong. Now I'm in the middle of doing the brakes. I guess I'm lucky to work with some mechanically inclined people who feel obligated to help me keep this workhorse running. It's been mostly a learning experience for me. I'm getting a little tired of "learning the hard way" and reading your posts seems to be setting me in the right direction. My daily vehicle has been a 1996 E-250 for the last 6 years that has been very reliable.
