Just wondered if anyone knew of a 6 1/2 inch column drop for a 2 inch Ididit column. I didn't recall seeing any that long.
The 6 1/2 inch drop the way I was taught to measure means 5 1/2 inches from top of column to the dash, plus 1 inch to the center horizontal diameter of the column.
For a pickup, I would for sure be on or under the floor, but with being able to put the panel seat back some (and the tilt wheel) I would prefer the wheel to be "centered" while driving, perpendicular to the column and not at the bottom of the tilt range.
I have a 5 1/2" one in there now and extended the 2 bolts down, but it has a slight twist to it. I'll probably just cut a spacer to firm it up if no 6 1/2" is available.
Not yet on the floor, but sometimes in the doghouse,
Paul, check out the column drop sold by Scott's Hotrods & Customs
(www.scottshotrods.com). Their column drop can be cut down to fit
from 2 1/2" to 7" drop. I'm not sure what column diameter(s) they use.
Wow, I agree that's a lot of drop! I currently have a 3" drop in my panel with the ididit, which I think is too short, I'll likely change it to a 4" before finishing up the dash mods. I went for the tilt column because I wanted to be able to tilt the wheel more vertical. Didn't like the "bus driver" feeling the stock column gave by being able to rest the forearms on the bottom of the wheel. I also didn't like a solid column pointed directly at my chest, saw too many impalements in the 50s.
Using a 13 3/4" Grant Signature series steering wheel. Might try a drop spacer of some kind, of course, but I'll check out Scott's. Thanks for the info.
Paul
PS: For my size, which is just a bit oversize (6'2"), with the seat back some and with the 13 3/4" wheel, even the 6.5" drop doesn't cause the column to hit the knees when getting in and out.
I am running car seats on a homeboy carpeted platform, so the overall seat height is less than a standard truck seat. Raising the seat assembly would make my 5.5 drop perfect. That's what's nice about a panel....there is plenty of space to mess around with insignificant things like the perfect seat position!
I have van conversion style seats on 2" risers (a little high for me at 6'2" I'm looking out the top of the windshield I'll probably drop them) in my panel. I am using a Grant 15" wheel.
