Ok now I know this is going to sound nuts, but I may be spending to much time thinking about this. How hard would it be to turn a f250 crew cab into a f150 crew cab. I know the rearend would have to be changed and the front hubs etc...... and has anyone ever turned a long bed into a short one? even thinking about turning this into a f150 crew cab short bed 4X4....man am i nuts or what. Just thought it would be easier to find 150 4by doner than a 250 whacha think...?
Cliff
Sounds real cool to me.I've been thinking about a 2wd like your idea myself for quite awhile. It would probably be easier to find a f150 than to change your f250.I've never put a tape measure on one but I would like to know what cabs and beds will interchange.Go for it if you like your idea, you're the one that has to be happy with it.
Ok its not that hard to Change the 2wd into fwd drive. I did it to a f-250 supercab. Changed it into a F-150 fwd drive. You got to do alot of cutting and welding but it can be done. I made it coil spring front end. But a factory supercab is leaf spring. the leaf spring setup would be easier. The wheel base on a supercap with a 8ft bed is longer than a crewcab short bed. So i don't know about the bed. You might end up with a oddball size. But hey that would be cool. Something different is always good. I'd say go for it.
Cliff, The difference between a 250 and a 150 is all below the chassis. Changing from 2wd to 4wd is a bit more challenging.
My thoughts are, you can save a lot of time by finding a 150 4wd and work with the chassis length as required to achieve your goal.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Find a f-150 or 250 supercab 4x4 and shorten the frame 5 inches, then you will have the 150" wheelbase you need, the super cab long bed is 155", much easier to shorten then to make it longer. Good luck finding a good short bet though. Your idea is not too crazy, I know a guy with an f-250 crewcab 4x4 short bed who want to put the back half of a supercab on his crew cab and have a 4 foot bed and rock crawl with it. The 150 2wd conversion would be easy the springs should bolt up and you would probally need to use a rear from a 72 and up truck to match the narrow frame. Can you measure your truck from front to rear, I an curious to how long the truck is, I have thought about taking the body off of my Deuce and a half military truck (6x6) and putting a crew cab long bed truck body on it, just an Idea

I have three crew cabs. A 74 f250 2wd short box a 75 F350 2wd long box and a 79 f250 factory fwd short box. As far as I know Ford never produced a 4wd long box version of these trucks. But just like the lengthened bronco's that Centurian produced, becaused Ford didn't have enough sense to build it themselves, any wheelbase can be achieved by adjusting frame length. Just make sure if you cut and splice a frame that you have someone who is familliar with metal properties do the welding and make sure you pay attention on where you want to add or subtract the length on the frame. Also this is not done with a 6011 farmers rod. It should be welded with a 7018 DC or equivelent low hydrogen rod.
-Haa Haa,
Many -a- great things have come from 6011 rods, I know from farmer's experience. Yes, but if you don't much about welding high strenth steel, I'd leave it to a pro.
(that would also be a fabulous time to box in the frame to stiffen it up)
Ok information overload....but thats a good thing me thinks...I know for sure that I would like to have 4X4 dont really care about it being 1/2 or 3/4 ton. Just thought it would be easier to find a 1/2 ton doner than a 3/4. We dont see that many 3/4's in Texas. But I am sure that I want it to be short bed.
As to the welding I am a certified welder so that part isnt a problem. I get payed for making oddball stuff at work, alot of the old equipment we use you cant get parts for anymore so we make alot of the parts we need.
I am glad to find out the chassis is narrower than standard. What is it the same with as?
As for length its about 20 feet long give or take some. I have a tommy lift on it so that makes it longer..
One last thought, just to make you guys think. F250 4X4 I would rather have coil sping front end, here is the kicker step side bed.
Just wanted to see wacha think. Cliff
Delta,
I'm in the middle of restifying a '73 Crew F-250 w/ a short step side bed, looks different to say the least! Post spme pics when you get a chance. I have a user gallery w/ pics of mine. Thanks!
Doc
Delta,
The truck came from a local construction company about 3 miles from the house. I had actually looked at the truck about a year ago or so and passed it up. It took a while to register what it was, so I went back and bought it cheap!
I've thrown a lot of parts at it and will paint it this winter hopefully!
Ok Deltafordman---there is a real simple way to turn an f250 into a f150----Simply order the f150 emblem from Obsolete ford parts and with a beer in the other hand---Walk out to that ole' f250--tear off that f250 emblem and then Stuff that F150 emblem Into the same holes--and Walla---Its so damn simple --ain't it--and very inexpensive too!!!!!!!!!fd :-X11
