step side body problem

hey guys, i have a new stepside that i assembled, both by plug welding and tig, with no tailgate fitted i took the vehicle by trailer on a 4 hr round trip and when i got home noticed the sides were sloppy, when i found the cause i was supprised to find the welds had all broken, i rewelded both sides but have noticed there is not strength in these areas to stop this re occuring.
the sides r breaking away from the bearers that attach to the frame, how did the factory overcome this? it appears to be a leverage thing, any ideas?

Gary....I think the problem was the lack of a tailgate. The tailgate latches hold the rear of the box together. Take a good look at the original latches, you don't really need a latch like that just to hold the gate up, they hold the box together. JMO.

My 55 rode in the back of a semi-trailer from Hanford, CA to Boone, IA with no tailgate and I have no slop at all. Was the bed rusty?

Sounds like your spot welder isn't getting the penetration required and the welds are tearing apart.

Who's bed is it: Dean, Hughes, pickup place, your own ? I have had a couple of dean beds and they have been great.

hey guys, should be getting enough peno, the other side is blistering the bare steel, the more i think about it the more i beleive it's caused by lack of surface area to weld the floor beems to the side panels.
Who makes the Dean bodies?, is it the guy in Nowra?
