Hey yall..first off i want to say that i am new here and the pround owner of a new (to me) 1977 Ford F-100 Ranger w/302. I bought it from my friends dad that bought it with the intention to restore. Now i am by no means a newbie around an autoshop but i am used to 4 cylinder "ricers" if you will with computer controlled everything.
Now to my problem. The truck had a c-6 transmission in it and my friends dad had been putting type f fluid in it. When i bought it the truck didnt have reverse and didnt want to shift under medium to full throttle, shifted normal if you drive like an older person (slow). Well i just had the fluid flushed and filled with the right stuff (mercon dexronIII) and it still dont have reverse but cleared up the shifting a little. OK my question, should I rebuild the c-6 or just buy a used c-4 from a u-pull it yard. If you think i should rebuild what kit should i look for(contents, etc.) and how long should it take roughly?? Thank you very much.
P.S. if it makes a difference I am going to be building up the motor(horsepower is like drugs you get a little and it aint enough, so you go get more)
I would just rebuild or have the C6 rebuilt. You will probably spend more than you bargained for if you do a swap. The C6 would my tranny of choice to put behind a built up engine too. As for a kit, you can do it yourself, but sometimes, a good shop can do it for you for not too much more if you pull the tranny and give it to them, rather than having them pull it out of the truck.
