Tailgate latches

I've seen them on a few trucks with these on and like these very much. It goes inside the rear tailgate and has a knurled handle. It slides and goes into a hole in the bed panel. It looks like you have to cut a slot into the tailgate to make it work. I don't have pics, sorry. It's very clean looking. Does anyone know where to get this kit? Is it difficult to install?

pro49- yep that's exactly what I was looking for. They don't give much information about it. It also states "weld in only". Does this thing get welded in? Pretty cool website too. I like the hidden hinges idea also.

I went to the website, but it wouldn't let me pull up the article. B/B, thanks for the offer on the items. Let me think about it, I'm a little concerned with the welding part, since my truck is already painted. I'd hate to have to repaint the tailgate and whatever. I thought it would be a simple install.

Read the article! Thanks. Looks like this install is good if your using a rough tailgate. For me to use this, I'd have to ruin my paint. They sure look nice installed. You wouldn't think it was that much work. After reading the article, it takes some fabrication work. LOL....

imlowr2 maybe you can make a tailgate latch that fits inside your tailgate without welding . Looks like you could use a smaller pices of pipe then you bed and put a spring inside with a latch of that and cut a slot in your tailgate .

Ed -

Mid Fifty carries tailgate latches in that style, but they aren't welded into the roll area. Just cut a slot and drill a hole. They look to have O-rings that grip the inside of the tailgate roll. They are billet aluminum. p/n 0261-M for gates with 1 1/4" ID roll OR p/n 0261-T for gates with 1"-1 1/16 ID roll. $89.95/pair. I think our 56 gates are 1 1/4 ID, but I can't measure mine that closely because it is capped.

They also offer grommets (p/n 80261) for the hole into the stake pocket to clean that up. $1.00/pair.

They also have a bolt-on style that looks pretty cool and works basically the same way.

See their catalog, pages 118 and 119.
