Question Reverse power wire

i'm installing the piaa 1500 reverse lights and i need to tap into the reverse power wire. does anybody know the color of the wire and does it matter where i tap in to it? the lights have their own fuse and relay. where would it be the most accessible? would it be easier just to tap in to the trailer harness? thanks for any help guys.

Of course, that means you're likely to take out the fuse if you plug into a trailer that has high-wattage reverse lamps installed.

Mass - do it the right way. Use the trailer plug harness to drive the coil of a typical 30-amp Bosch relay. Pull power off the battery through one of the customer access wires or one of your own. That way, you won't have problems.

no it wont............ i am all for doing it right the first time, but dont like doing extra work that is not necessary. if he has 2, 55 watt lamps thats 110 watts. the back up lamps in the truck and trailers are around 10-15 watts but lets say they are 30 watts, so thats another 120 watts. 110+120=230 divide that by 12.5 volts and that gives you 18.4 amps in a 20 amp circuit...wont be a problem.

i am pulling power from the battery. i'm putting in a 3-way toggle, and i need the power from the reverse. i just wanted to know if it was safe in tapping into the trailer harness. from the way you two describe it i should be fine. btw this is a kit, with an inline fuse and relay and they are 2 55w lamps. thanks for your help.

The point is, the trailer wiring is installed based on a set of common specs... most of the trailers expect the ability to pull 20A from that circuit. Maybe the trailers you pull don't draw that kind of current, there are some that do. For instance, one I've pulled has a pair of 55-watt sealed beams for reverse lights so you can actually see where you're backing.

Sounds like Mass has it right with the relay.
