I was looking at a truck the other day, its a 70 F100 Sport Custom. its an auto, but the engine isnt original. Its not an FE engine. The owner says its a "351" but he's clueless. It looks like a 429/460 to me, very wide with valve covers that angle on the sides to be flat on top. There arent any external differences on b/n the 429 and 460 are there?
Thanks
Aaron
See if it has 8 nuts holding on the valve covers. If so it's probably a 351M. If it has a 2 in the corner of the head it might be a cleveland or M with cleveland heads.
The way I usually tell the difference between a 351M/400 and a 429/460 is to look at the exhaust manifold bolts. The 429/460 bolts are straight across from each other and the 351M/400 are diagonal.
An even simpler /quicker way is to look where the thrmostat housing is mounted > On the block or on the intake manifold.
429/460 =Intake Manifold
351C,351M,400 = front on the Block
