My 1991 F150 4X4 with an auto trans. will only go about 20 mph and the rpm's go really high. When I take off it takes some time for the gear to kick in and when it does it gives me a little whiplash. At this point I'm going about 10 mph, rpm's start to go high again, it will shift hard again. I'm going about 20mph and about 4000 rpm and it won't shift anymore. Any ideas? Thanks.
Mine is doing the same thing tuekiwk. Not sure what the problem is with mine, but it's quite annoying. I'm fearing that the tranny is screwed. Although with mine, once it gets into 3rd and then overdrive, its perfectly fine. And ideas?
It's still worth checking computer codes - KOEO, CM, and KOER. Not having a check engine light on does not necessarily mean there are no codes present.
Talked to the guy at the local tranny shop, told him what was going on, and he said it might be a sensor on the tranny. On Monday he going to pull some codes.
Even though the odometer and speedo are working, could this still be failing? This code was in my continuous memory bank by the way. The only other one I am getting now is the OD cancel switch not changing state. Could that be the problem?
I had that feeling. I've never manually pulled the codes on an f-150 before. I've done it numerous times to my ranger. All you gotta do there is smash the gas, turn the wheel and hit the brakes. Aprarently I forgot to push the OD button also. Thanks for clearing that up!
Would a tranny thats slipping throw some type of code?
If the tranny is slipping it should set a slip code. If there is a VSS or PSOM code that is VERY likely to be your problem. You can have a bad PSOM and the speedometer still work perfectly. The VSS output goes to the PSOM which drives the speedo and sends the speed signal to the PCM. I have seen the PSOM output to the PCM go bad on these.
However! Have you tried shifting the transmission manually? That should override the PCM. If it neutrals going to 2nd gear (which is what seems to be what you described) you most likely have burned up the band and its overhaul time.
When I manually shift it to 1st I have no trouble, MOST of the time. When I put it into second, thats when it starts slipping. 3rd is fine though, although it might slip a little and I dont realize it. Overdrive is fine also.
By the way, there are no slip codes being shown. As a matter of fact I reset the computer and took it for a drive earlier for about a half hour and it has no codes at all.
Actually this is what I dont understand. It worked fine until I pulled someone out of the ditch using reverse. Is reverse tied into any forward clutched at all?
I don't have an application chart handy to compare what is applied in what gear but its entirely possible you did something by pulling in reverse. You might have lost the intermediate roller clutch. It must hold to give 2nd gear and may be turning loose.
I would recommend you have a reputable transmission shop check it out further.
