Hey guys
When the cold weather finally hit I noticed that when i would first start up my 77 f-150 w/pwr steering in the morning the steering would feel like there is no power to it and then it will loosen up and work just fine. I checked the fluid and it is full. also i just replaced the pump a few months ago. Could this be the pump going out?
Thanks
David
you can think about it this way. you can fill up a basketball in 95 degree weather and its fine, but if a few days later it is 25 degrees you can get that same basketball and it will feel like its low on air. its the same thing with the power steering mechanisim, the same amount of fluid in the pump on a cold day doesnt make as much pressure until it all warms up in there, dont ask me why probably something to do with physics..
Has to more with fluid properties...PS fluid is essentially a hydraulic fluid. Similar to oil, as the fluid temp increases, the viscosity decreases. The same inverse relationship exists at colder fluid temps. The ability for the fluid to travel through the system is impeded simply by the fact the fluid is "thicker." Like the above post, I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you're in REALLY cold conditions.
Check that the belt is not slipping. A while back my rad hose burst, sprayed water on the pump pulley and it slipped; it felt like the pump had packed up but it only felt like that due to the slipping.
