Right, you can't lump everybody. What gets me are the "Experts" that relate it to drunk driving. I've seen plenty of cops driving around in their cruisers talking on cell phones, on more than one occasion. Whether it is work related, or they are talking to their family, it makes no difference. If there were to be a law on banning cell phones while driving, they would have to abide by it as well, don't you think? I can hear the argument for their side already. But, it's no different than Joe citizen talking on a cell. Having a headset would be acceptable to me, how is it much differnt than having a passenger in the car and carrying on a conversation. However, holding a phone up to your ear, talking and shifting your car in traffic is unacceptable to me. I just don't answer the phone if I'm in that situation.

It may not make any difference, though. New York state has had the law on the books for a while now, and I see plenty of idjits driving around yakking it up on their cell phones.

That's the problem: people think they should be able to do anything they darn well please, the heck with the law and everybody else, as long as they can satisfy themselves, why should anyone else matter?

I guess I'm afflicted with some mental illness that makes me think rules should be followed, especially if they can save some lives or serious injury.

I'll go back to my padded cell now.

Interestingly, research has shown that hand-held/hands-free doesn't make much difference. (I did a research project on this last year. I can't name the sources now, but some of them were pretty respectable.)

I do not know what the law in my state is. I do not believe in making laws that affect everyone because a few people can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I use my cellphone occasionaly while driving. The thing is I am usually on isolated roads and I always find out what I need to know and hang up the phone. My cell phone usage probably totals less than 30 minutes a month. My home phone usage is not much more than that. I do not use the phone for yakking, if I am on the phone you can bet it's neccesary.

I would not be for a law as long as the full extent of the current law was to come to bare on those that do abuse there cell phones when driving which they do not! I think that many of you have point out that you do use them when there is not alot of people on the road or on back roads, which I suppose many could also drive drunk under the same circumstances and not have any problems either. The differents is that when a accident does acure when drinking and driving the full extent of the law comes to bare.

Putting a cell signal jammer in a car wouldn't work. What if your passenger is expecting a call from his pregnant wife that it's "time to go". Can you imagine the trouble that follows when he gets home, wife in the hospital?

I'm against any cell phone/driving law, but common sense should prevail. Unfortunately, some people can't walk and talk at the same time. Just plain rude, bump into you, and keep on going.

I'll admit, I talk and drive. I have a hands free, speaker phone, and voice dialing. I rarely use any of it. But talking and driving is an aquired skill. I don't place a call unless I'm stopped (going back to the Motorola Brick days).

Keep it short. "Pick up something on the way home from work" "Is that all?" "Yep" "Okay, bye"

If you use your phone in that manner, it's no different than a CB.

Oklahoma doesn't have any specific law about it.

Text messaging is distracting the hell out of kids around here though.

I say kids because most older people don't text

There was talk of a law up here a few months back, but it seems to have died down. I'm like most everyone else here, I talk on speakerphone while in my truck (which is hard with the exhaust, most of the time people think I'm just making engine noises!), and don't place a call unless I'm stopped at a light. Also, if I'm on a phone call, even on speakerphone, I stay in my lane no matter how slow it is moving.

I feel that I should be able to do whatever I want to inside my own vehicle. I'm sick of people pushing laws on everyone because of other idiots.

If you are worried about people causing accidents why don't they start enforcing the laws we already have about improper lane usage, turn signals, stop lights, etc. The accident isn't cause by the cell phone it's caused by the person not knowing what they're doing.

This is just like the arguments for banning guns. I've been shooting guns since I was 6 years old, have had proper training, have my FOID card and obey all the laws. Why are you trying to pass laws that affect me when its the guy stealing the gun, or buying it out of the back of a van that is going to use the gun to break the law.

in NY the fine for talking & driving is minimal the 1st time. the surcharge is what hurts as it is with any ticket in NY. hands free is legal, but still nuts. we have women that can apply makeup while driving, & do (crash & burn) but not talk on a phone.. so it's a prespective thing. i'm not trashing girls, i'm just saying that if a cop is going to hammer a cell phone while driving, shouldn't eye-shadow be as illegal

JUST CURIOUS - those of you against cell-phone usage in the car are you also against talking to passengers while driving ?

(i know it's not EXACTLY the same, but it ain't all that different either)

it's like with everything else - everyone has their own limits, just some people don't know theirs...
