ok...so i figured out what kind of motor i have and now i'm wanting to build on it a little... i have found a 331 stroker crank on ebay pretty cheap, and also a rebuild kit. i was wonder, could i use the stock connecting rods and push rods and this still work, or will i have to get another set. the rods are pretty expensive and if the pushrods work i'm not really worried about changing them. would this still be a 331? or something smaller. (i'm boring it out to .030 if it makes much of a difference in the inches)
thanks,
matt
Matt, You'll hear a lot of yada yada about rod ratios, but I wouldn't get worried about that talk. The problem will be the pistons; can you get pistons that work with the stroker crank. We're talking about a 1/8" difference here; .125". The stock 302 rod is 5.09", your head gasket will probably be .042", the throw of the new crank is 1.625" and your block height is supposed to be 8.206". So you'll be looking for a piston with a compression height around 1.485". A little less would be ok, but you'll want to deck the block to get a piston deck clearance of .035 to .040.
Check my arithmetic to be sure I didn't mess it up, but the idea is that you have to get the right compression height piston to get the right clearance.
ok...i added the rod (5.09), the gasket(.042), and the new crank(1.625) and i got 6.757, then i subtracted the block height (8.206) and got 1.449. i don't know if that's right or not, but wouldn't i want a smaller piston than 1.485? i don't know...i know you have done this alot more than me (this is my first), but if i got a piston with a compression height 1.485" wouldn't it be hitting the head?
331 with 5.09 rods There ya go I'm going to build one of these for my 92. I unfortunatly have to build my 350 for my monte carlo first. My machinist has done quite a few of these for circle track cars so they get hammered on there on their 6th season going on 7th guys love them, so there isn't a reliablity issue. I have found mine will be around 1800 to build, the one I did last year with 5.4 rods was around 2800 said and done so this is a cheaper route I have a thread on here search it good info in there.
man i'm pretty confused though...i just got on a sight that has a 331 stroker kit... it says that the rods are 5.400 and the crank is a 3.25 stroke...that alone adds up to 8.65...i thought the block height was only 8.26...how does this work???
