So I picked up a completely stock 429 out of a 1972 Mercury for $50.00. From what I have found it will bolt up to my 1979 ford f150s C6 with some different motor mounts, also it should be a thunder jet (does that all sound right???) anyways I’m wanting to build it pretty strong. As of right now its my daily driver and still is completely stock with the original 351m, 9inch Dana 44 but does have a 9inch lift and 38’s. I’m wanting some info or suggestions on what to put into the motor and hopefully its comes from some experience. What I was thinking was to bump up the compression ratio, maybe to 9.5, any ideas? Also what cam shaft? I’ve heard good things about the comp cam high energy cams, also any ideas. I’m going to back and forth between the performer RPM intake or the Stealth??? L&L headers are that way I think I’m going to go but I’ve heard that they wont fit when I put my Dana 60’s on but with the lift I don’t know? Basically I’m just saving up the money for it and want to do it right. I don’t need a full out built to the nuts motor but I want it to stand up and salute when I hammer down on the throttle, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Before you do anything else check the casting numbers on the heads. They will be numbers cast into the head on a small pad between two of the exhaust ports. I'm betting they start with "D2". If so, junk 'em. These heads (circa 1972 vintage 429s and 460s) are THE worst heads you can have. They are boat anchors.
just to let ya know the l&l headers will work with a 60 expessily with a life also look into out side the fram headers l&l makes a mean set of them and i agree with brad the d2 heads r junk i built up a set it was a wast of money. look into dove heads or c8ve or c9ve heads they will bump up your compression and have the screw in studs and i think you can run chevy rockes than that will give ya some adjustament and they r cheap but you might get luck and your motor may have a good set of heads on them
I recently finished a swap similar to yours, and let me tell you; your gonna love the difference of that 429 over the 351/400m. The comp cams high energy's are nice, but i went a step further and used the xtreme energy, for the intake i choose the wieand stealth (cobra jet), which is a little higher but i have heard great things about both.. The L&L fenderwell exit headers are great, but take a while to get because of the backordering. Overall i am very happy with everything, and to see my whole setup; look in my gallery. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions
another option for headers are stans tri y"s. very good headers excellant quality and fit ,and they are chassis exit .go with the comp extreme 4x4 cam like a x4262,get some better heads if those are d2"s.do a mild port job on the exhaust as this will really wake it up,if done right easily worth 40hp.i have a 429 in my 74 4x4 using ported dove heads and that cam with intake and 750holley and hooker super comp full length headers with a 2500 stall converter.easily good for 425hp.thats a 100hp over your stock engine.this is in my daily driver
