I have a 2000 Ford F-150 XL 4.6L V8 and when to a local muffler shop and got a quote for them to do a dual exhaust system. They quoted me between $225-290 depending on what system I have on there. What are the different systems? Also he asked if I wanted to go straight from the cat(s) back or what I wanted to do. What are the different options for my truck? What I'm looking for are duals out the back on both sides of my hitch with chrome tips, and a deep bellowy sound to it. I completely spaced asking the guy these questions because all I was interested in was the price, so I decided that I get on here and ask here. Can anyone help?
The difference in price is probably between straight out the back or dual side exits. I'm assuming the bent pipes are slightly more expensive than the straight ones. Just my .02
A custom catback system would be nice with a flowmaster muffler and dual tailpipes. going with a single muffler and dual tailpipes is your best bet. I find it interesting how cheap of a price you got quoted for duals. I've worked in 3 muffler shops already and have never quoted anything under $400 if it all is custom-bent. Pre-bent kits of course are cheaper. You basically get what you pay for. If the price is cheap the quality might suffer. Ask what kind of pipes they are using, aluminized or stainless, etc.
If you want any sound at all out of it you need to go with no muffler. The thing has 3 cats on each side and is not at all loud without a muffler. If you think it's too loud without the muffler then add tuned or muffler tips to it.
3 Honeycomb packs, all the exact same size (1 in the "precat" and 2 in the "cat") but is just 2 chambers. I only know this because I just cut one open. It's really loud without the cats and just a glaspack on it. Sounds like the good ol days.
I put cat-back duals on my 97 4.6 . I had it done at the local "shade tree" shop here in orange park FL. Paid a little over $200.00 Got 2 1/2 inch pipe(nothing fancy) with 3 inch chrome tips straight out of the back. I told him what level of tone and noise that I wanted and he picked out the muffler. Two years ago last Nov. no complaints
