being out of the country for a few years, i am back and seem out of the loop on the tire and wheel thing. i seen 17, 18 and 20 inch rims on trucks and seem they are more popular now than the standard 16.5. is it they are better? or just the fashion trend? is there a good choice of tires for these? and if so, will they go out of "fashion" and i will be stuck with 17 inch rims no one makes tires for in a few years?
16.5's are the worst wheel you can run for the simple fact there is no bead to hold the tire on the wheel, it simply relies on air pressure.....like a small lawnmower tire for example
One more reason large rims are popular with some people is that the sidewalls don't flex or bulge as much. I've noticed a lot of the rockcrawlers like the 20" wheels because the tire won't fold and slide sideways as much when they're off camber at low PSI. Personally I hate big rims, but the 16.5" wheel is a pain for keeping a bead at low pressure.
I don't think 17" rims will "go out of style". However, there are plenty of tires for 15" and 16" rims so in my book they are still the best bet. I don't care for 16.5's period unless they stay at street pressure, for the reason mentioned above.
