GEM Module thread!!!

What do you guys know about this thing? My mechanic says it's the reason my wipers aren't working and that I need to replace it. Cost of the part is $370 and labor will be about $100.

Would this be something I could take care of myself and order the part off of eBay or elsewhere online? They mentioned it would need to be programmed, so I may not be equipped to do that...

My 2002 does not have a GEM but rather a VSM (vehicle security module). From what I gather, it's about the same thing and I had to replace mine when the fobs stopped working. The VSS cost $125 and I installed it myself. Come to learn after I installed it, I had to temporarly plug in the old one, have the dealer scan it and re-flash the info into the new one. Nothing but the fobs worked right so if they say the GEM needs programming, it will most likely act the same way. Programming cost me $80 athough the dealer would have charged over $300 to do the whole job.
