Question Transmission work when adding a chip?

My truck is a 1996 7.3 powerstroke with 209,000 miles and still runs great. I have a new 3 in. downpipe and then a 4 in. pipe the rest of the way with a big GAW 5 in. tip. My question would be that if you add a chip of moderate horsepower, say 50 or 60, would I have to do any work to the transmission?

I'm also wondering about the black smoke factor. Still don't have any ! Any suggestions?

Adding a chip will definately add some smoke, however, if everything is running right, you still won't get clouds of it unless you are running some serious power. Also, I would highle recommend getting a shift kit for the tranny. Don't know if you have already had the tranny rebuilt once or not, but if/when you do, get a triple disc converter as well. I have installed a Sonnax Kit from BlackCloudDiesel, one of our sponsors here on the site, it is probably the best 50 bucks I could have spent on the truck, really made a significant difference.

BTW, Welcome to FTE, best forum on the web if you ask me.

I had my tranny rebulit and 2 months later I put a superchips tuner on it and smoked the torque converter. I took it back to the guy that built it and he said that chips/tuners were known for that but he still fixed free of charge. Later I noticed on my bill for the rebuild he didnt list a t/c??? I dont think it was the tuner I think he tried to get by without doing his job! I'm running a 125hp flip chip now with no problems. I am going to get the sonnax kit though.

Question 210,000 Miles too old for a chip?

Is 210,000 miles too old for a chip of 60 or 70 hp?

If you get a T/C get the Trans-go tugger kit too, you have to take the tranny out anyway to install that.
