Pulled the axle shafts out of my '79 F150 4x4 w/ a 9" rear end in it. The bearings it has in it are still good, does not have the sealed bearings, I need to replace the oil seals. I think the only way to replace the oil seal is to replace the bearings as well, I'm not positive though. My local parts store needs to know the rear axle capacity, the tag on the door reads 3350 lbs. Is there a higher rating for the rear axle on half tons? My question is can I put the higer rating bearing in, or would it do no good? I already posted in the differential/axle section but no luck so far. Thanks.
Aren't all of the 9" Ford rears setup with the sealed bearings? The seal is in the axle tube behind the bearing and it keeps rear end fluid out of the bearing and off of the breaks. How do you know the bearings are good? Pull the axles and check them. When you have the axles out, you will see the seals in the ends of the axle tubes. They are easily replaced.
I took the bearings off of the axle shafts tonite at work, I also have access to a press. Is there an easy way to press the new bearings on or just find a length of pipe long enough to go all the way down on the axle shaft. I did look on the pumpkin and there was no tag.
Can you press them on from the other side? I don't know what kind of press you have, but couldn't you put the bearing side down either through a hole in the table or on a forked table and press from the flange side? Basically, press the axle into the collar as opposed to pressing the collar onto the axle.
ya you wanna change them mine went bad a couple months ago on my 77 and oil got into my drums and i was like wow thats alot of work so i took it to a friend i know that works at ford alot easier plus i had to buy new shoes pissed me off
