I have the tubular swing away mirrors on my '76 and they're tired. One side doesn't move at all and the other keeps moving on it's own. So it's time to take them off, replace some of the hardware with stainless steel. I was wondering what I should use for the "insulators" (couldn't think of another word) that wrap around the tube under the clamp that holds the mirror. I have used inner-tube rubber but it wont move at all once its tight. There are also some kind of composite washers on the mounting bracket end that allow for movement.
The trick is to find something similar to the original product that provides good resistance but still lets you adj the mirror when you want. I doubt these bits are available new so if anyone has some ideas as to what would make a good substitute for this material I'd love to here it.
