I have a 2004 6.0 CC 4X4 KR. I bought this truck 2 mos ago and have put about 4,000 miles on it. Love the truck and it drives great. when I bough the truck, it already had an Airaid induction kit on it. I have performed maint on the filter. I do hear the turbo burp when letting off of the throttle (only at low speeds) After readin the forum, I am no longer concerned about it. I am concerned about a noise that I hear when I shut off the engine. I hesitate to even call it a noise because it is more like I can hear something turning.. I assume that this is the turbo. It lasts about 2 seconds after shutting the engine down and slowly fades. My question is "Is this normal" Should I not be able to hear the turbo at all when I shut the engine down? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Turbo spin down is what you are hearing, it is very normal for any turboed vehicle.
What a do it when I arrive at my destination I let the truck idle for about 30 seconds to allow the turbo to fully spin down. When you shut off the engine there is no way for oil to get to the turbo so it spins down and creates friction with the housing which "can" lead to a few problems in the late future.
If you are towing or comming from a long drive it is recommended by Ford to allow the truck to idle and cool down for around 5-7 min. For evryday driving 30 sec to 1min should be enough.
You can also get oiling systems that feed oil to the turbo for a few minutes after you shut down. Also there are systems that run the engine for a few minutes after you take out the key to cool it down. Shuting down a hot turbo does BAD things to the bearings. The oil will "coke" dry up and bake on the bearings causing the turbo to fail.
