300 carb problems

I have a 77 f100 with a 300. I have had two carbs on the motor in the last 11 years. I have had the original rebuilt and it ran great. 8 years later that carb finally started to leak and I was told it was beyond repair. I purchased a remanufactured carb and the truck has not ran properly since. It is hard starting, will not idle, runs rich, has less power and gets worse mileage. It should be noted that this carb is a non emission carb. Meaning it has less emission holes for hoses and vacuum and such.

Any ideas to resurect my previsouly well tuned motor?

I don't claim to have the answer to your question but I have been through the same problem. I'm about to change carbs again because the one I am running right now leaks badly around the throttle shaft bore. It's so sloppy that there is no fixing it.

The thing that I have learned about these things is that they changed almost from year to year. Reading through the spec charts is have seen, there are drastic differences in the float settings. Don't remember the numbers exactly but they vary like a quarter inch or more. And this is on carbs that look virtually identical. The difficulty I've had is that the ID tag on two different carbs has been missing so I had to take them apart and try different float settings until I got something that worked.

Check the power needle and jet, the needle has a spring that pulls it sideways and it rubs on the jet. After time the jet gets worn and allows extra gas to defeat the mixture settings.
