I just wanted to say hi. I just joined because I recently acquired a 1985 F150, 4.9l 1 bbl, auto tranny p/u. It's got 126000 miles and about 40k on rebuilt engine. It's had about 300 miles put on it in the last 2.5 yrs. so I'm fixing little things here and there like no power steering due to leaking lines, new fuel pump and fuel tank sender.
I do have a question if someone can help me. It seems to be lacking power like not dropping to 2nd gear when throttle is wide open at about 40 mph or at anytime for that matter. I checked linkage and it appears when 1 bbl carb linkage is wide open it doesn't press against pivoting transmission linkage. It also appears like throttle plate doesn't open completely vertically when gas pedal is matted. I'm assuming it should and would therefore put pressure on trans. linkage also.
Could someone give me some guidance in this area? I haven't done a search on this website as of yet which I will do immediately.

I had an 83 F-100 with the 300. I had to replace the throttle cable when it snapped, and for some reason the new cable would only open the carb up about 1/2 way. You can do 1 of 2 things I did or both, like I did. On the end of the cable under the hood, there is a plastic sleeve with that little metal clip on the end that locks onto the metal ball on the carb linkage. I drilled a hole in the plastic sleeve closer to the firewall that would slip over the ball and stay on snugly. This pulled the gas pedal up off the floor a bit. Another thing you can do is get under your dash, and pull your gas pedal up, creating a gap between the end of the cable and the part of the pedal it rests on. Put some alligator clips or something similar that will hold on to the cable without popping off when you step on the pedal. This also raises the pedal off the floor some. My truck was a whole different animal with the throttle wide open. First make sure there isn't anything interfering with the functioning of the linkage though, or this may not help at all.
This sounds exactly what the problem is because the pedal is bottoming out before the throttle plate is fully open and the kickdown lever is actuated. I'll give your suggestions a try. Thanks for your help.
