I'm swapping the 4.0 engine out of a '92 explorer(bad engine)with a '96 4.0(good engine). I've already changed the upper intake and wiring harness so the everything mates up when I drop it in. I found that the 92 has a low oil sensor on the side of the oil pan and the 96 does not. Since I'm using the 92 wiring harness, will the engine run without that sensor? Any input will be a great help.
That sensor has nothing to do with oil pressure. It's just a level sender. It detects when you're a quart low and turns the dash light on. It will not effect the running of the vehicle. If it did they wouldn't be able to use it as the engine would shut off at a quart low, this could possibly cause a serious accident.
Hello- Welcome to FTE! I have moved your post to the specialized forum we have here for your question. Check out the list of tech forums we have here. There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!
The early 4.0's oil level switch is right on the oil pan and only goes to teh oil light on the dash. There is no tie in to the PCM or the fuel pump circuit. There is a seperate oile pressure switch that also runs only to the gage on the dash - no PCM or fuel pump circuit tie in.
