Go to the glow plug relay and follow the two orange wires with the white stripe.
Near the oil dip stick they go into a connector where the truck harness connects to the engine harness.
Try unplugging the connector and examine it for signs of overheating.
I had a problem like this with mine several years ago.
The connector had overheated and deformed to the point the wires were not making contact well enough to heat the glow plugs.
I had to cut the orange wires on both sides of that connector and splice them back together so they made good contact.
Also have you checked for voltage at the relay and at the glow plug connectors when the button is pushed?
The glow plugs could be in great shape, but if the power is not reaching them they won't work.
Thanks for the idea Dave, I took this picture....Looks to be ok but I will take it apart and inspect it further.
Dave, what do you mean by voltage relay? The test I did was this: I put my test lamp on the female connector that attaches to the GP, then had my GF hit the GP button, the light came on...so I think power is getting to the GPs...I will still check the orange wires.
fone, it sounds like its cranking fast enough, just not catching or firing. Doesnt sound slow or drained by any means.
bigred, I am going to try and stop by a parts store and get a free battery test. The two batts in the truck are the 1000 cca but I have no idea their age. Will check them out.
Thanks for the ideas guys!! Have been leaving it plugged in now just so it will start but would like to be able to start it without being plugged in someday.
You already answered the question about voltage going through the relay and to the plugs.
The connector does not look deformed, that is the right one. Check for corrosion inside the connector though.
When you have the batteries load tested you must disconnect the ground from the battery you are testing to get a good test. Otherwise you are drawing current from two batteries and even bad ones will look OK to the machine.
That is my snow plow hat.
When you spend hours shoveling out the driveway, as soon as you put the shovel away some joker in a snow plow comes by and plows it shut again.
At least I do look the part when I am plowing since I have the correct headwear.
