77-79 4X4 CrewCabs

One quick question. Did all crew cabs in the above mentioned years come with a front Dana 60?

Sad, but no. I pulled a D-44 out of a '78 F-250 Crew Cab and it had only a 7700# GVW. Crew Cab did not automaticly get you a D-60. The more I hear it was the Snow Plow option on the F-250's that got the D-60 as well as all F-350's.

True, the 1973-79 F-250 crewcabs 4x4 came factory Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear. You are correct about the snow plow trucks with the Dana 60's.

Yea mine has a D44 front and D60 rear. However, there are different axle weight ratings for the D44 I think. Mine is a 5400# axle. I think there are D44 axles with less weight ratings. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There are two front axle ratings for the D44, at least in the earlier years. On the lighter duty version (3300#), the steering knuckle is about 4.5" in diameter. The "heavier duty" version has a much larger steering knuckle, perhaps 6-7" in diameter? I haven't seen one for awhile, so I'm not exactly sure of the size.

I have heard that they are otherwise very similar, so little is gained by the heavier designation.
