Idling doesn't hurt a V10. Our plant Security Dept had a 99 with about 140,000 miles on it but countless idling hours. I walked by that thing hundreds of times over the last 6 years
idling away. It is still just as quiet as my 05 and that dept. just got a new truck.
Guess what they got, an 06 F350 with a V10. It is the only 3 valve I have ever seen beside mine. Why this engine is so rare has to be one of life's mysteries because they are the sweetest stock engine you can buy. You don't have to chip this beast to make it jump. Right out of the box, it is a real treat to own and drive and those of us that own them are a happy crew. The 2 Valve guys love their V10s so much , they don't even want to trade them for 3 valve V10s. This V10 Forum is like a Love in back in the sixties. Up in the Bitch Forum they are all trying to justify the big bucks they put into the sick litre and most of them can hardly wait to trade up to a 6.4.
Me, I'm thinking this might be the last new truck I will ever buy, that is what V10 ownership has done for me. I always had a wondering eye shortly after buying the last 7 new Ford trucks I have owned. Not this time. This is the truck I always wanted and maybe I finally got as lucky in truck buying as I got in the love dept. because I have had the same gal for 35 years and She's still the one.
wow! this post has gone off topic. wrench, your making me misty. glad to hear 99% of everyone in this forum is super happy with their trucks. long live the V10 beast.
I agree it is a great engine. 133k of towing, speeding, fast acceleration, and abuse. With routine maint. it still seems to have the power it had at 12,000. It just draws attention by sounding bad, but the truck looks like new.
I just had the torque converter go out. The dealer replaced it - now drive doesn't work, just 1st and 2nd. So, it's going back and they can look for the ticking too.
you are also right tony. because the lash adjuster on the modular engines acts directly on the valve and cam, there is no more noise from an old lifter bleeding down fluid causing clearances to open up and making the old ticking sound.
Sure it can! That "lash adjuster" is just a basic lifter (maybe a little smaller) which when it gets old can bleed down - been there done that
Picked up the truck today from getting a new trans, new air to oil trans cooler, new radiator with built in coolant to oil cooler, and new half of transfer case housing (on them b/c they dropped it). They checked out the ticking with a scope and found that when they touched the scope to one of the COPs it was louder than the others. The tech said that the plug was probably coming loose. He took the coil off and the plug was loose enough to take out by hand w/o socket wrench on the extender. He tightened the plug down and the ticking stopped. So, easy cheap fix. Good thing I am bothered by noises otherwise the thing could have blown out and I'd be doing head repair. I am going to check the rest of the plugs soon.
