I've had many problems starting my 89 302. I've replaced the ignition modules, the ciol, the ignition switch, the key cylinder, and nameless other small parts here and there. Now today the dang thing won't start. When I turn the key, I here a big clunk and the engine turns slowly for about 3 seconds before it dies. Is this the starter or something on it? I'm not a mechanic, but I learn from experience. I do know that eveything that I already replaced is installed correctly.
Sounds like a bad connection. Check all your battery terminals, battery cables, connections to starter/solenoid. Check the battery for proper charge (may try boosting it). If you have adequate battery power for sure and the starter barely turns, it's most likely a bad connection. Visual inspection is not enough, remove terminals and clean them - replace corroded wires...
You can take the starter out and bring it to a shop and have them test it for you.
I'm with Mustang on this one. I've had numerous problems with battery cables in all my F series pickups i've had over the years. doesn't seem to be a strong point for ford.

In my view, battery cables are battery cables - they're all hooked up the same dispite brand. After 10-15 years this type of stuff just needs to be dealt. It stinks but it's part of the game we play

And look for corrosion in the battery cables - nice shiny connections don't guarantee proper flow of electricity if the cables themselves are bad. If the resistance is too great than it won't start.
