Need step bars?

Ever want a cheap pair of nerf bars? Dont want to spend the $$ for some? Me too. Today i was laying on my futon (you know the cheap like 79$ one from wal-mart and i was just thinking about my truck and parts for it. When all of a sudden i reached up and put my arm on the bar above my head and realized what i was touching. I stood up and looked at the futon, and as your laying on it, there are 2 bars shaped EXACTLY like nerf bars at the head and the foot of the bed. They are about the perfect size for a single cab truck. I'm thinkin one of these days i'll cut them off (leaving the futon fully functional) and put some nice caps on the bed where i made the cuts, then weld some plates on the ends of the bars and bolt them to my truck. I dont know how sturdy they would be, but i'm sure they'd work just fine with a little bit of fab work, and maybe a couple more coats of paint. But hey, a penny saved is a penny earned right? Just thought i'd pass along the idea, as i'm sure people throw plenty of these away.

those tubes may be a little thin, but I dont know for sure since I've never looked myself. excelling idea though since that would be a VERY simple and low expense alternative to buying expensive parts from a shop.

They feel pretty thick (at least thick enough to hold my 170 lb body). I should do a tech write up on these puppies. I'm going to do it! i just need some time first. lol

ok, well, I suppose thats thick enough for me. of course, I could stand on the roof of a porsche and not dent it beign that I'm only 110 pounds including boots.

I say go for it, and do the tech write up for us. as I said earlier, its a low expense and simple alternative to spending lots of money to buy em someplace.

mine on my 05 s'crew have paid for themselves already, 3 car doors have hit my truck, including an old lady today, but they hit the nerf bar instead of the paint...
