My son has a 98 Ranger, 4 cyl. automatic transmission. Back in the summer, he had the transmission overhauled. Today, he started his truck and everything seemed to be wrong.
The ABS light stays lit
The check engine light will come on at various times
The speedometer now does not work
The transmission will not shift
The truck runs rough
He thought maybe the computer was messed up and disconnected the battery for about 20 minutes. This did not help. I checked for any obvious vacuum lines that may be loose or disconnected but did not find any.
With very limited experience in dealing with such matters, it does seem with such a wide range of problems all at once, the computer would be a likely target.
If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, well my first thought is VSS, vehicle speed sensor. Located on top of the rear differential.
CEL: that means there are codes stored and the computer is trying to get your attention. Your local parts store will probably rent you a code reader, since you really can't safely drive to their store.
To me, all of these symptoms point straight to the VSS. The VSS tells the computer the speed of the vehicle (hence the name) and from there it controls virutally everything you mentioned. The speedo, the tranny shifting, and the ABS would all be affected. It would also probably affect the rough running and pop the code causing the CEL to come on. It's thankfully a pretty cheap and easy fix.
Get those codes pulled!
WE checked and it was the VSS. We decided to let our local mechanic change it for us. $63 total. (parts and labor) Thanks for your help. It was greatly appreciated.
