leaking fuel pump....more

Hey Guys,

About a week ago I spent a good afternoon and evening chasing down leaks on the 460 so I could really tell how much I was burning. Well, one valve cover was loose, and fuel pump was leaking, and of course the pan was leaking as well. I tightened the valve cover, the pan, and put on a new gasket under the fuel pump. About half the puddle under the truck disapeared but I was still leaking somewhere. Guess....yep the fuel pump. I cranked that big block up and got under it to watch and sure enough that pump starts leaking oil right at the gasket. I cleaned the pump really well and put gasket sealer on it when I installed the new gasket. Why is it still leaking? What now? Is this a sign of a bad pump? I don't have a way to measure the pressure so I don't know whats going on in it. Just looking for some knowledge or ideas. It is leaking oil and not gas. I would really like to stop the leak. My wife has tracked in oil twice from the puddle when I'm not home. She blames me and my old purple pick-up.

Thanks
Austin

I had the same problem on my 400 motor. I ended up having to replace the fuel pump, and when I took the old one out, the hole on the top of the pump was where it was leakin from. I guess it was just a bad pump.
