Question Overdrive "slipping".

I just replaced my SROD "single rail with overdrive" standard transmission less than a month ago.Its the three speed with overdrive, now while in overdrive if I step on the gas to go up a slight hill or just go a little faster the R.P.M.'s go up and you can hear the motor rev-up but the when it settles back down the truck will then go faster.I was just wondering if anyone else out there has an SROD and delt with this before ,I'm thinking I craped out and got a bad one, thats what I get for buying rebuilt insted of fully remanufactured but it was what I could afford at the time. I'm sure I'll probably have to take it back and switch it out but was thinking maybe one of you guys might know about these SROD's and could let me know if theres a way to fix it. It does great in all the other gears and I have'nt had any other problems or indications of the trans, being bad. Thanks ,Mark

I think your clutch is slipping.A bad gear in a standard usually means no drive at all in that gear.I'm not sure about your trans but I think the reverse gear runs off the overdrive,so if the overdrive gear is bad, reverse is also affected.

Would the clutch "slip" if I'm doing 65 and not shifting or even touching the clutch peddle? When I press on the gas to go a little faster I hear the motor rev a little and see the R.P.M.'s go up then it settles back and you feel the Bronco start to go faster.

Yes,it takes a lot more pressure in the top gears to keep the clutch from slipping. If the tranny was just replaced, you may have go thru the set-up procedure for the clutch again. That is assuming the clutch is in good shape.A clutch will slip in high gear and not the other gears with even fairly gentle acceleration.

Thanks "460",When I replaced the trans I left the bell housing hooked to the motor and unbolted the trans, then just stabed the new trans back in.What do you mean by"set up procedure"?

There are vehicle specific procedures to adjust free-play,etc.(mechanical linkage vs hydraulic linkage).Sounds like an inspection of the clutch condition was skipped over in you trans r&r.Clutch disc might be worn to the point it is slipping, or the pressure plate might be worn, warped, bent fingers(might happen during trans install). If you don't have,I suggest picking up a Haynes or Chilton manual, they are great sources of info.

Yeah, if you pull the trans, it's always a good idea to look at the clutch. From the sounds of it, your clutch is shot and needs replacement. If it's a mechanical clutch, it might just need to be adjusted. If it's hydraulic (is there a small master cylinder on the firewall next to the brake booster?) then there's no adjustment and the clutch is shot.
