Smile 5000 miles between oil changes ???

Does anyone wait till 5000 miles as the book states ??? or stay @ 3000 miles as we have been told for years ???
Also wondering about oil type, regular old oil -vs- synthetic ? or possibly a blend ? what brand does everyone like ? I like valvoline but cannot find it in 5w/20.
this is my #1 post on this site, glad to be a member and you gents are a hoot to read.

Aloha and welcome to FTE!

I personally (sometimes due to laziness and sometimes due to being too darn busy) go with the 5K oil change. I only use Motorcraft 5W-20 and Motorcraft filters.

I did, however, change the oil in my 04 F-150 with Quaker State 5W-20. It was time and Wal-Mart only had enough for my V10. When the MC stuff comes in this week, I'll do a fluid swap no matter what the mileage.

I'm a Mobil 1 5W30 fan with a Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter from Chinamart (Walmart). If it wasn't for oil and filters I'd never shop at ChinaMart.

As far as milage, somewhere between 3k and 5k miles depending on free time, mood I'm in, etc. For the most part the truck is a daily driver with 20 mile trips, so the engine and oil isn't really stressed a lot.

every 3k here with a full syntec. your factory oil is a blend so stay with that at a min.
FORD states in the owners manual 5w20 motorcraft and many of the guys use it only with out any problems. i personally use 5w30 castrol syntec. as i have a big stash of it. my big blue uses none between changes at 3k. it's really your choice.
my personal feeling as a person who was a dealer tech for 42 years. is 3k if you drive a lot of city/highway . 5k if it's all long run highway as the motor has a chance to drive out any condensation that may build up in the oil, try and stay beween those numbers
the one thing i have to state and know the guys will back me up on. is use a ford MOTORCRAFT oil filter or a very good none "wally" store brand . most of us use the motor craft only.
welcome to FTE man. and by the way. ram tastes like dead skunk! not chicken. all thou they do turn tail "chicken" after being wooped on by a good running v10

Every 3k oil and filter & inspection. Pay the dealer to do it, they use 7 qts of 5w 20 Motorcraft oil and FL820S filter. They also do an inspection and fill if needed the trans, PS, brake MC,WW, radiator, tire pressure and shake everything inspecting exhaust, susp, etc.---all for $30.69 +tax. That is the change interval the book recommends for the '05 V-10.

Fysh, Captain Charlie is right on the button. I change mine every 3000 miles because it is so cheap and I really like the USA Ford Motorcraft 5-20. This V10 is the only truck engine I have ever owned that does not use a little oil when you work it hard . All my other truck engines , gas and diesel all used a quart every 1000 miles or so when I was towing or hauling heavy. Not the V10, the oil stays clean and never moves on the dipstick. I am 55 but I have accepted that times and engines have changed and both Honda and Ford have gone to 5-20 and both these companies are getting incredible long lives from their gas engines using this light oil. They are made for it.

The reason I stated US Motorcraft is because in Canada Ford Motorcraft 5-20 is not a semi synthetic but just a premium oil. They are a different product with a different color and feel . I still have a case of the Canadian stuff and I am using it in my 02 Honda Accord. When it's gone both my vehicles will get the US product.
The V10 is built in Canada so we can do some good work up here.

I did have one vehicle that actually had the level of the oil go up when I worked it hard and that was my 04 6.0. Leaky injectors allow diesel into your crankcase and help that engine keep a good level on the dipstick.

Ford and Blackstone Oil analysis people do not agree on how much diesel fiuel should be allowed to accumulate in your oil before it is harmful. Who do you think allows more diesel in the oil before they state you have a problem. Tough question isn't it .
Ford can hardly wait for all those 6.0s to be off warranty.

Dust sand and crap get into the oil when you live in conditions where the atmosphere is full of this particulate matter.

I live in an area where I always follow the 90 day 3000 mile schedule Cheap enough insurance.

I have lived in other pristine clean and clear areas where I could change just once a year or 10,000 miles and still have very clean (tested) oil.

Environment has more to do with frequency. Todays oils are much better then anything we used to get and if it was not a warranty issue I think you could easily go double the recommended change interval in a clean area.

I use a 5,000 oil change interval (easy to remember when it is due), and I have over 283,000 on the engine without an overhaul. I am a Mobil One fan, but haven't always used it in this engine. The key to long engine life is regular oil changes(5,000 is often enough) with good oil, and never letting the engine overheat.

Question

This is a slightly different tack, but do the synthetic (Mobil 1) users seem to get better fuel economy? I remember getting 1/2-1 MPG better with the synthetic than I did with the oil of 25 years ago. I went back to regular oil when the only weight of Mobil 1 available in my area wouldn't hold up in my 454 Chevy.

A mileage increase in the range you mentioned is still valid with the use of synthetics. Mobil 1 (and probably others) are now available in many different viscosities. The trend from engine manufactures is to go to lower viscosities in their newer engines. In an older engine I would still go with a littler heaver oil than recommended for the new engines, but I wouldn't go overboard and use really heavy oil.

i would use the 5w20 for the 5k. as long as it says ford 930a spec on the back, you are buying a synthetic blend. that is the ford 5w20 requirement. it must be a semi synthetic, reduce wear, lower deposits.

great info guys, thanks for the responses and glad to make it on the site.
I bought my 03",f-350, V-10 SD on Laber day of 2004, I was looking to buy a psd but found this "sweetheart" of a truck, cannot explain it but it just felt right, and I have not had a second thought about it. this baby runs great and doesn't care what I pull.
My wife is a dental hygienist, she has a patient who is a tech @ the local dealership who told her I made the right choice, he says the 6.0 psd has bought him some nice toys with all the "overtime" he has put in on them.

hang around some more you will find this site addictive and that we all have some darn good answers. oil well thats one area were we all agree good oil change it a lot and use the ford filter only.
3k to 5 k changes.
but heres a bit of my own input. stay away from most fast lube shops. thier filters cost them about 6 to 8 bits "75 cents to a buck". their filters, filter ditly. some go as far as useing recycled oil. "those with 995 prices kind"
stay with a good oil 3 k semi blend 5 k max full syntec. thats only my personal feeling . best of luck with your v10 man. glad to hear you have a bseg.

I change out the oil every 3K at the dealer with this beast. It cost too much to be cheap.
