i am looking at buying a lifted v-10 f250 and the guy doesnt know much about vehicles. he has no idea what gears are in it. is it marked anywhere on a placard or anything? anyway to tell what it has in it???? thanks for the help...
There is a blue sticker on the driver's door jamb that lists what gear were originally installed. On the sticker it says AXLE, and under that is a two digit code. Post the code here and someone can tell you what the truck had. Who knows if it still has those gears.
To find out jack up both rear tires and place the trans in nuetral. Put a mark on the driveshaft and turn one of the tires exactly one revolution. If the other tire moves in the same direction as the one you're turning, the number of revolutions of the driveshaft is the gear ratio.
If the other tire doesn't move with the one you're turning, have someone hold it. In this case you have to divide the revolutions of the driveshaft by two to get the gear ratio.
ok so i had 39.5 tires and went down to 35's i did what you said and my driveshaft turned 6 times to one wheel turn but my other wheel was turning the opposite way. what would my gears be
If you were turning one wheel and the other wheel was turning the other direction you didn't read very well. I said if the other wheel turns in the other direction you needed to have someone hold the other wheel. If both wheels are turning in opposite directions you can't count the driveshaft turns to calculate the ratio. Go read the last paragraph in my first post again.
