Hi, kinda new here. I have a 1998 F-150 with 210,000 (proud owner). Anyways every year when I first go to use my 4 wheel drive I doesn't engage the way it should.
This is what it does. I put it in 4 wheel high, the 4x4 light does turn on. But will not engage. I've check and the front drive shaft does move the way it should. Is it possible that the front hubs somehow freeze up? Not really sure how the automatic hubs really work just that sometimes I need to go reverse then forward before it "clicks" in. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys
Read the post 4-wheel drive won't engage........you don't have hubs,I changed the switch on the trans/case it's $30 and very easy to change, its located on the trans/case near the front drive shaft.
do you know what this switch is called? I've looked under the truck and found this black colored switch I believe that has one wire and a vaccum line, I think this is what your talking about. What is this used for? thanks
SW-6251 4L3Z-7E440-AB oil switch ,there are some different trans/case's and this # is in Canada but it might be the same. There is no vacume line on mine it faces toward the front of the truck. My truck is 98 F150 XLT 4.6 (V8) 5 speed and manuel shift trans/case.....The switch sends a signal to engage the front axle.

the only thing I found is this black round and flat thing. I called a ford dealership and they say that this is a transfer shift motor and priced at $270.00
I believe your question is too vague........If your truck has a **** on the dash, then you have diffrent switches then someone with the manual on the floor 4x4 lever. You probably should just trace the vacum line from the front diff back to where the switch is located....probably somewhere near or on the transfer case.Don't mix it up with the hight rang low range switch or motor.Which manual 4x4 guy's won't have .They do probably have the vacum operated front diff seeing how there is no hubs to lock....

Ok, I admit I'm being a little bit dumb here. I have a floor lever for the 4 wheel drive. Before when looking up underneath this thing I mistaken the front diff for the transfer case. (stupid me not thinking) Anyway, if I put the truck in 4 wheel the front drive shaft does spin like it should but the 2 front tires don't catch. The disc thing I'm looking at must be some type of actuator, it has two wires to it and over top of it on the differential itself is a vaccum line. Line is in good shape, no cracks or anything. could this acuator be bad? and how to test if it is or not?
The switch that smudge was talking about, which I think is the sensor overtop or near where the shift levers come down looks ok. But if this was bad would my front drive shaft still spin when in 4 wheel? This is going to be something simple I'm sure.
thanks
Your drive shaft will spin but the wheels won't it's the switch on the trans/case, I just changed mine this morning. Crawl under your truck and see if you can move or push the pin into the black round thing, if it moves its not siezed and its probaly the switch. the switch is the cheapest part try that first.
now I feel like I'm making progress. The acuator has a pink and blue wire attached to it they run up to this device on the firewall behind the battery. The acuator valve will move but only using pliers. I do see what looks like a oxygen sensor located on the T/C on the drivers side looks like it would be easy to replace. When I did make a couple of phone calls earlier no one new what I was talking about when I said switch. What is the proper name of this so when I call I give them the right information, I even gave them the part number you gave me (this was a ford dealer and auto warehouse). I would think that they could tell me what this part is.
I did find your part in stock at a local dealer. Your right 30 bucks. i'm going to go get in now and try it. One more thing though when I pull the hold one out will oil spill out or no?
