How to check codes????

How to check codes????

I was wanting to know that little trick to pull codes. I know you jump some wires, and count the engine light flashes. After I count them out where do I go for the answers??

Now how do I start the test, do I just get set up and the turn the key? If the truck has more then one code does it pause between codes or something? Where do I find this plug, I think its by the relays under the hood right? My last question is does it matter if the truck doesnt run or will it still give me some codes?

Sorry for all the q's but I don't what to make things any worse.
